The Two Escobars

Pablo Escobar was the richest, most powerful drug kingpin in the world, ruling the Medellín Cartel with an iron fist. Andres Escobar was the biggest soccer star in Colombia. The two were not related, but their fates were inextricably and fatally intertwined. Pablo's drug money had turned Andres' national team into South American champions, favored to win the 1994 World Cup in Los Angeles. It was there, in a game against the US, that Andres committed one of the most shocking mistakes in soccer history, scoring an "own goal" that eliminated his team from the competition and ultimately cost him his life.

The Two Escobars is a riveting examination of the intersection of sports, crime, and politics. For Colombians, soccer was far more than a game: their entire national identity rode on the success or failure of their team. Jeff and Michael Zimbalist's fast and furious documentary plays out on an ever-expanding canvas, painting a fascinating portrait of Pablo, Andres, and a country in the grips of a violent, escalating civil war.

Bastards of the Party (2010)

Raised in the Athens Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, Cle “Bone” Sloan was four years old when his father died, and 12 when he became a member of the Bloods. Now an inactive member of the notorious gang, Sloan looks back at the history of black gangs in his city and makes a powerful call for change in modern gang culture with his insightful documentary, Bastards of the Party.

Bastards of the Party draws its title from this passage in “City of Quartz”: “The Crips and the Bloods are the bastard offspring of the political parties of the ’60s. Most of the gangs were born out of the demise of those parties. Out of the ashes of the Black Panther Party came the Crips and the Bloods and the other gangs.” Bastards of the Party traces the timeline from that “great migration” to the rise and demise of both the Black Panther Party and the US Organization in the mid- 1960s, to the formation of what is currently the culture of gangs in Los Angeles and around the world.

The documentary also chronicles the role of the Los Angeles Police Department and the FBI in the evolution of gang culture. During his tenure from 1950 to 1966, Chief Robert Parker bolstered the ranks of the LAPD with white recruits from the south, who brought their racist attitudes with them. Parker’s racist sympathies laid the groundwork for the volatile relationship between the black community and the LAPD that persists today.

12 Minutes of Fuck Philadelphia

The background to this. Back in 2006 a bunch of comedians were performing in Philadelphia, a city that's notorious for acting up at live events, booing performers and generally just being assholes for the sake of it. After watching a handful of comedians perform the crowd began to grow restless and booed the next two performers off the stage. Step up Bill Burr, who a couple of minutes into his set begins to get the same treatment. But instead of calling it a night he decides to unload a fury of insults like no other human has ever unloaded on a crowd. The result is fucking legendary and needs to be seen if you have not already. Amazing.

If you need some nerdy, hip hop, comedy podcasts in your life while you cook, workout or waste away your life sitting on public transport, then listen to the gold that is Juan Epstein. It's the best shit-talking time-waster the internet has to offer.

Hosts Cipha Sounds and Peter Rosenberg have interviewed everyone from Ice Cube and MCA of the Beastie Boys to heavy-chested porn stars and Rhys fuckin' Darby. In their words it's 'the place to go if you want to hear stories you have never heard, hear people react to and answer questions you can't believe anyone would have the nerve to ask. These are some of the most unique interviews you ever will hear.'

Below is a list of some of the better episodes I've enjoyed while drying dishes and lifting weights off my chest:

Nirvana - Lithium (Live 1992)

This is Nirvana teasing 'Rape Me' then performing 'Lithium' at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards, as well as accepting the award for Best New Artist.

A little background to the performance from Seattle journalist, Krist Novoselic;

“Kurt wanted to play the tune ‘Rape Me’ and was adamant about it. The MTV people were upset. We were being asked from all corners not to. I thought we should play something off Nevermind, do the gig, and leave. Easy, right? No. Kurt was very stubborn and refused to play another tune. There was quite a swirl around this issue.

I went back to the trailer and had a still-warm beer. Yuk, but I drank it anyway. To resolve the song controversy, we said we were going to do “Lithium,” but we decided among the band to pull a prank and play a few chords of “Rape Me” at the beginning. Even though the issue was resolved, the back and forth between their people, our people, us and them, or whoever—it was draining.”

A Brief History Of High Fashion Sneakers

Has any garment enjoyed a more impressive rise than the once-humble sneaker? From fitness shoe to high-fashion staple, the sneaker's ascent reflects some of the most significant pop-culture developments of the last few decades -- from the impact of advertising and mass production, to the influence of hip-hop and the NBA.

From July 10, visitors will be able to trace this history at The Rise of Sneaker Culture, a traveling exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum exploring its history and cultural significance.

But Elizabeth Semmelhack, senior curator of the originating exhibition at Toronto's Bata Shoe Museum and author of the accompanying book from Rizzoli, says that its history is more complex than we might think. "When the first sneakers debuted [in the 1800's], they were themselves luxury items," she says, citing the high price of rubber and the working class's lack of leisure time. "We're kind of coming full circle in a weird way."

So, how exactly have we ended up in an age of die-hard Nike addicts and Parisian designer kicks?

Ghostface Killah - Cocaine Lexicon Flow (1997-2001)

After releasing his debut album Ironman in 1996, Ghostface switched up his flow. From 1997 through to 2001 he perfected his style of high-pitched, emotional stream-of-consciousness narratives, containing cryptic coked-out slang and non-sequiturs. During this 5-year run, Ghost's nonsensical spaghetti raps outshone all Wu members on Forever (1997) and The W (2000), peaked during his magnum opus in 2000 with Supreme Clientele, then began to teeter during Bullet Proof Wallets (2001). In 2003 he signed with Def Jam and made the decision to quit drugs completely while recording the Pretty Tony album. And with that his rap style (sadly IMO) changed to what we hear today.

He's been consistently putting out great albums since his debut (maybe only the Roots are more consistently good), but he was most defiantly at his greatest from from '97 to '01 - a period where he was in the conversation as the best rapper to ever live. Below is a tribute to that time.

Riding atop a paddle board, artist Sean Yoro (aka Hula), paints murals while floating on the waves, placing his works just above sea level. The murals, all portraits of women, have a hyperrealistic quality that appear as if each is existing just above the tide. Due to the works’ position above the water they reflect perfectly into the waves, the image extending out far from the painted surface.

30 For 30 Sole Man

Sonny Vaccaro is one of the sports world's most charismatic, polarizing and influential figures. Now 75, he is still a fast-talking maverick whose zeal for basketball, advocacy for underprivileged kids, and instinct for sales forged an era of unprecedented growth for two pillars of pop culture: basketball and sneakers.

It was Vaccaro who advised agents during the ABA-NBA wars of the 1970s, who launched Nike's "Air Jordan" empire in the 1980s, and who ushered in the professionalization of youth basketball in the 1990s, when players such as Kobe Bryant and Tracy McGrady, both of whom signed shoe deals brokered by Vaccaro, turned high school games into auditions for the NBA.

"Sole Man" is a definitive, first-hand and unflinching account of how Vaccaro rose from humble Pennsylvania steel town roots to become the most valuable marketing asset in the $13 billion athletic shoe industry. Vaccaro's personal arc mirrors the narrative of basketball's ascent over the last 40 years. It is an era in which James Naismith's creation morphed from a regional game tainted by segregation and gambling into a global enterprise that stretches from Brooklyn to Beijing. And to a staggering degree, the basketball community is really just Six Degrees of Sonny.

Pilots Explain When To Actually Worry During A Flight

If you've been on a flight and its hit "bad turbulence", or the engine started making a "funny noise" and you think you're going to die, but then you don't, and you act like it was a near death experience, then this article is for you.

When a recent flight smacked into heavy turbulence last week, my four-year-old daughter grabbed my right hand.

“Don’t worry, Daddy,” she said. “It’s gonna be OK. It’s just a little bumpy.”

I withdrew my hand and continued flying the plane with my armrests. After landing, I sought a better authority on what to worry about in the air than someone who believes the moon is made of cheese.

Three pilots were happy to take me through the most common things that worry antsy airplane passengers, helping us to distinguish between “this is normal” and “I wonder if I remembered to make those changes to my will.”

1. Turbulence and Quick ‘Drops’

“It’s annoying, but it’s very rarely dangerous,” says Patrick Smith, pilot and author of the book Cockpit Confidential. “Even in very bumpy air, a plane is seldom displaced in altitude by more than 10 or 20 feet, and usually less.”

He adds: “Passengers will describe the plane as falling or diving by hundreds or even thousands of feet, when in fact it’s hardly moving.”

Only one airplane in history has crashed due directly to turbulence—a BOAC flight in 1966.

“That was a guy who buzzed Mt. Fuji with a 707 full of passengers just for a thrill,” says Ron Nielsen, retired pilot and author of Real Life Fearful Flier Stories. “We learned not to do that anymore.”

Complications brought on by stormy weather, especially wind shear, have brought down planes in the past. But Doppler radar now prevents pilots from flying through anything worse than extremely choppy air, Nielsen says.

2. Engines Cutting Out

It doesn't mean anything, since an airplane’s engine does not correspond to its speed like a car’s engine does.

“It’s more like a bicycle,” says retired airline pilot Tom Bunn, founder of the Soar fear-of-flying course. “You can be on your bicycle and stop pedaling and still coast for a while.”

Even shaking means nothing—unless it’s accompanied by a low-frequency rumble. Then you contemplate those changes to your will.

“That means you’re approaching a stall,” Bunn says, “but that doesn’t happen in normal operations, because there’s warning systems that go off before pilots approach anything close to stall speed.

“People would have to worry about that 100 million times for it to happen once.”

3. Smoke in the Cabin

Where there’s smoke on an airplane, there’s probably not fire. Yes, something is burning, but you’re sitting only a few dozen feet away from 100 tons of fuel combusting at 1,700 degrees Fahrenheit.

The overwhelming likelihood, according to Nielsen, is either a broken seal that keeps engine exhaust out of the air-conditioning system, or oil seeping into one of the pressurization turbines that cools the air.

“It won’t be a favorite fragrance,” says Nielsen, “but it’s rarely anything dangerous.”

4. Engine on Fire

During ignition, it’s probably pooled-up fuel that caught fire before being quickly extinguished by the jet blast from the now running engine.

A similar brief flash during flight probably results from a rare encounter with one of the most inedible rotisserie birds you will ever observe. Neither situation is dangerous, despite the worry stirred by Capt. Sully’s “Miracle on the Hudson” crash.

“Birds can lead to circumstances that will reduce the amount of thrust available to fly, but you’re talking about big birds—not sparrows or pigeons, or even a couple of large geese down one engine,” says Nielsen. “Every day, airplanes hit birds.”

Neilsen says that Sully’s birds were not the 10-lb. kind fired into engines during bird-ingestion testing. “These were huge frickin’ geese,” he says. “And they weren’t ingested in just one engine—but both. Try and find another case where bothengines failed due to bird ingestion.”

5) Oxygen Masks Deploying

A loss of cabin pressure either means the pressurization system has failed or a leak is causing air loss. Worst-case, it’s a broken window, door, or crack in the fuselage.

“These are all bad for business but normal abnormals that we practice regularly in the simulator.” Nielsen says. “All pilots are trained to descend rapidly enough to an altitude where breathing the outside air won’t cause anyone to pass out.”

6. The Ground, Ocean, or French Alps Spiraling Toward You

This incredibly unlikely view in your window is pretty much the only way—barring any emergency-landing crew announcements—for a passenger to definitively ascertain whether something is going significantly less than well in the cockpit.

And, at this point, what good is worrying going to do?

That Was a Thing: Montell Jordan’s ‘This Is How We Do It’

Montell Jordan is the first artist I was ever disappointed in, and that’s maybe a bizarre way to remember someone. But maybe it’s not.

When “This Is How We Do It” came out, it was just so unbelievable and catchy and perfect and undeniable. I could barely stand it. Barely anybody could. Montell was tall and handsome, so that helped, because that always helps. And the name “Montell Jordan” is just a great name. But the song, which sort of fell over itself to be cool, but in the best way possible, was instantly likable. The only single that had a longer stay at no. 1 on Billboard’s Top 100 chart in 1995 was Mariah Carey’s “Fantasy,”1 and that should be an indicator of just how unstoppable “This Is How We Do It” was. More important than that, though: It was a true marker in history.

“This Is How We Do It” was a flawlessly executed new jack swing song, and it came at the perfect new jack swing moment, which is to say right as it became 100 percent OK for new jack swing and rap to commingle. Before then, back near the end of the ’80s when new jack swing became a thing, it stayed on the opposite side of the street from rap, derided by rappers as corny and pandering. But in the early ’90s, Andre Harrell, an ambitious and accomplished record executive, helped to blur the edges with Teddy Riley, who’d fathered the genre. “This Is How We Do It” was the tilt. In 1996, Dr. Dre guest-featured on Blackstreet’s “No Diggity” — that was the next step in the coalescence. And then by 1997, Puff Daddy, who’d served under Andre Harrell at Uptown Records, mutated them into one single entity and obliterated everything; over a four-month stretch that year he had his sticky little fingers on the no. 1 song in the country 25 out of the 28 weeks. So “This Is How We Do It” was obviously the most fun song of 1995, but it was also (maybe) the most important too.
